Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines are visa-free for Kenyans; Indonesia and Cambodia are visa on arrival; Vietnam is a USD 25 e-visa; and Thailand, since 15 September 2026, needs a tourist e-visa applied for a month ahead. Here is the full country-by-country table, the cheapest flights from Nairobi, and two routes with daily budgets in KSh.
Last updated: 18 September 2026. Written by Maria Kamau (Mkay), ICF-Certified Travel Coach.
Hey there! Welcome back to Travel with Mkay. I’m Maria, most people call me Mkay, and Southeast Asia is the region I send more Kenyan women to than any other outside Africa. It is safe, it is cheap once you have landed, the food is unreasonable, and, crucially for those of us with a green passport, most of it lets you in without a queue at an embassy.
Most of it. Not all of it. Thailand, the country everyone wants to start in, rewrote its entry rules on 15 September 2026 and Kenya ended up on the wrong side of every list. So this guide does two things: it gives you the visa rules for each country exactly as the official sources state them today, and it gives you a route that works around the paperwork rather than pretending it is not there. Prices are September 2026, converted at KSh 129.6 to the dollar.
Visa rules for Kenyan passport holders, country by country
| Country | Kenyan ordinary passport | Cost | Stay | Before you land |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Malaysia | Visa-free | Free | 30 days | Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), online, within 3 days of arrival |
| Singapore | Visa-free | Free | 30 days | SG Arrival Card, online, within 3 days of arrival |
| Philippines | Visa-free | Free | 30 days | eTravel registration, online; onward ticket required |
| Indonesia (Bali, Java) | Visa on arrival or e-VOA | IDR 500,000 (about USD 28 / KSh 3,700) | 30 days, extendable once | Get the e-VOA at evisa.imigrasi.go.id before you fly (Kenya was added to the list in 2023 but the site’s older country list omits it, so hold the approval at check-in); customs e-declaration |
| Cambodia | E-visa or visa on arrival | USD 30 | 30 days | E-visa at evisa.gov.kh takes 3 business days; e-Arrival card |
| Vietnam | E-visa | USD 25 single, USD 50 multiple | Up to 90 days | Apply on the national portal, about 3 working days |
| Laos | E-visa or visa on arrival | About USD 40 to 50 | 30 days | E-visa only valid at the main airports and a few land crossings |
| Thailand | Visa required in advance (tourist e-visa, category TR) | Fee shown in the e-visa portal at application | 60 days, extendable 30 in Thailand | Apply at thaievisa.go.th at least one month ahead; Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before you fly |
| Hong Kong (stopover) | Visa-free | Free | 90 days | None |
Two universal rules on top of that table. First, six months of passport validity beyond your arrival date; every country on this list applies it and airlines enforce it in Nairobi. Second, the yellow fever certificate. Kenya is on the WHO list of yellow fever risk countries, which means each of these governments can demand your yellow card at the border, and the check-in desk at JKIA will ask for it before they print your boarding pass. Keep it in your hand luggage with your passport.

Thailand: what changed on 15 September 2026 and what you do about it
For two years, 93 nationalities could walk into Thailand for 60 days without a visa. Kenya was never one of them, but the visa on arrival counter was a workable fallback. On 31 August 2026 four orders were published in the Royal Gazette, and on 15 September they took effect:
- The 60-day scheme ended. A new 30-day tourist exemption covers 60 countries, from the US and UK to India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and South Africa. Kenya is not on it.
- Visa on arrival, previously open to 31 nationalities, now covers only Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia.
- The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) remains compulsory for everyone.
So a Kenyan passport holder needs a visa before flying. The right one for a holiday is the tourist visa, category TR, applied for online at thaievisa.go.th under the Royal Thai Embassy in Nairobi. Here is what the embassy’s own requirements page (updated 6 September 2026) asks for:
- Passport bio page and an ICAO-standard photo taken in the last six months.
- Proof of what you do: an employment contract plus a leave letter from your employer, or business registration documents if you own a company, or an affidavit if you freelance, or a student letter. The embassy warns it may ask for these to be notarized and certified by Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Copies of the passport pages showing your previous travel history and visas, including old passports.
- An original bank statement, stamped by the bank, showing a balance of at least THB 20,000 (about KSh 78,000) throughout the last three months. If a family member is funding you, add proof of the relationship.
- A round-trip flight reservation in your name and a hotel booking covering the entire stay (or a detailed invitation package from a host in Thailand).
Processing takes at least 15 working days, and the embassy tells applicants to apply at least one month before departure and not more than three months before. The visa is valid for three months from issue, gives a stay of up to 60 days, and can be extended by 30 days at an immigration office in Thailand. Immigration officers can also ask arriving tourists for proof of funds of THB 20,000 per person.
My practical advice: treat the Thai visa as the first task of the trip, before flights. Get the bank statement stamped, get the leave letter signed, upload everything in high resolution (the embassy says blurred scans get one chance to be fixed, then rejection), and only book the non-refundable flight once the approval email arrives. Or build your route so that Thailand comes at the end and apply before you leave Nairobi with a later travel date. The e-visa is online, but as a Kenyan resident your application is handled by the Nairobi embassy, so it cannot be switched to a Thai embassy in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore once you are on the road.

Two routes that work for a Kenyan passport
Route A: the visa-light loop (3 to 4 weeks, no embassy visits)
Nairobi to Kuala Lumpur to Singapore to Bali to Manila (or back to KL) to Nairobi. Everything here is visa-free or an online visa on arrival, so you can book it next week.
- Kuala Lumpur and Penang, 7 days. Land in KL (Ethiopian, Qatar, Emirates and others connect from Nairobi). Batu Caves, the Petronas skybridge, Jalan Alor’s night food street, then the train or a KSh 3,000 flight north to Penang for George Town’s street art and the best hawker food in Asia. Daily budget MYR 140 to 200 (KSh 4,500 to 6,300).
- Singapore, 3 days. A KSh 4,000 to 8,000 flight or a scenic bus. It is expensive, so hawker centers for every meal (SGD 5 to 8 a plate), Gardens by the Bay’s outdoor areas for free, Marina Bay at night for free, and one splurge. Budget SGD 90 to 140 a day (KSh 9,000 to 14,000).
- Bali, 7 to 10 days. AirAsia or Scoot from Singapore, around USD 60 to 120 one way. File the IDR 500,000 e-VOA online the week before, rather than counting on the airport counter: Kenya joined Indonesia’s visa on arrival list in 2023, but Indonesia’s own information page still shows an older list without it, and an approval in hand ends any argument at check-in. Ubud for rice terraces and temples, Canggu or Uluwatu for the coast, and Nusa Penida for a day trip. Budget IDR 500,000 to 800,000 a day (KSh 3,700 to 5,900).
- Optional: the Philippines, 7 days. Cebu Pacific and AirAsia fly Bali or KL to Manila or Cebu. Visa-free for 30 days with an onward ticket. Palawan (El Nido) or Siargao are the reasons to go. Budget PHP 2,500 to 4,000 a day (KSh 5,200 to 8,200).
Route B: the classic mainland loop (4 to 6 weeks, two e-visas plus Thailand)
Nairobi to Bangkok to Chiang Mai to Hanoi to Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap to Bangkok to Nairobi. This is the route in every backpacker’s photos, and it is cheaper per day than Route A. It needs the Thai TR e-visa, the Vietnam e-visa and the Cambodia e-visa, all applied for online from Nairobi before you leave.
- Bangkok and Chiang Mai, 8 days. Kenya Airways flies non-stop to Bangkok in about 9 hours 45 minutes, four times a week. Temples, Chatuchak market, a canal boat, then the overnight train or a KSh 4,000 flight north to Chiang Mai for cooking classes, the Sunday walking street and an ethical elephant sanctuary. Budget THB 1,000 to 1,500 a day (KSh 3,900 to 5,800).
- Vietnam north to south, 12 days. Fly Chiang Mai to Hanoi (about USD 80 to 150). Hanoi’s Old Quarter, a two-day Ha Long Bay cruise, the overnight train or a flight to Da Nang for Hoi An’s lanterns, then Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnam is the best value in the region: VND 700,000 to 1,000,000 a day (KSh 3,500 to 5,000) buys a private room, three meals and transport.
- Cambodia, 5 days. Bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh (6 hours, about USD 15 to 25), then Siem Reap for Angkor. The three-day Angkor pass is USD 62 and worth every dollar. Budget USD 30 to 40 a day.
- Back to Bangkok. AirAsia from Siem Reap to Bangkok is usually USD 60 to 100, or the bus and border crossing at Poipet for the adventurous. Your Thai TR visa covers a single entry, so plan the loop to enter Thailand only once, or apply for the multiple-entry version.
If Thai processing times or the bank statement rule make Route B difficult, do Route A now and Route B next year. Malaysia and Singapore will still be visa-free.

Getting there from Nairobi
- Kenya Airways, Nairobi to Bangkok, non-stop. The only direct link between East Africa and Southeast Asia. On 17 September 2026 the airline’s site showed return fares from KSh 112,750 for September and KSh 138,280 for October travel. Google Flights had a return at USD 649 (about KSh 84,000) for late October to early November.
- Ethiopian via Addis Ababa to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Manila. Often the cheapest to KL and Manila; the Addis layover can be long.
- Qatar via Doha and Emirates via Dubai to every capital in the region. Nairobi to Doha alone was showing under USD 450 return for October, and the Gulf carriers regularly price Nairobi to Bangkok or KL at USD 600 to 750 return.
- Inside the region: AirAsia, Scoot, VietJet, Cebu Pacific and Jetstar Asia sell one-way hops for USD 30 to 90 when you book three to six weeks ahead. Book on the airline’s own site; the aggregator versions strip the baggage.
My cheap flights from Nairobi guide covers the timing tricks. The one that matters most here: Nairobi to Bangkok fares can move by tens of thousands of shillings depending on the day of the week you depart, so check the whole week before you book.
What it costs: the honest budget
These are per-person daily figures for the way I actually travel there: a private room with a fan or basic air-con, street food and local restaurants, buses and trains between cities, one or two paid activities a day, and a beer or a coconut in the evening. Hostel dorms cut them by a third; boutique hotels double them.
| Country | Daily budget, USD | Daily budget, KSh | Sample prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vietnam | 25 to 40 | 3,200 to 5,200 | Pho VND 40,000 (KSh 200); private room VND 350,000 (KSh 1,750) |
| Cambodia | 25 to 40 | 3,200 to 5,200 | Meal USD 3 to 5; guesthouse USD 12 to 20; Angkor 3-day pass USD 62 |
| Thailand | 30 to 45 | 3,900 to 5,800 | Pad thai THB 60 to 80 (KSh 250 to 310); room THB 500 to 900 (KSh 1,950 to 3,500) |
| Malaysia | 35 to 50 | 4,500 to 6,500 | Nasi lemak MYR 8 (KSh 250); room MYR 80 to 130 (KSh 2,500 to 4,100) |
| Indonesia (Bali) | 30 to 50 | 3,900 to 6,500 | Nasi goreng IDR 35,000 (KSh 255); guesthouse IDR 300,000 to 450,000 (KSh 2,200 to 3,300); scooter IDR 80,000 a day |
| Philippines | 30 to 50 | 3,900 to 6,500 | Meal PHP 150 to 300 (KSh 300 to 620); island-hopping day PHP 1,200 to 1,800 |
| Singapore | 70 to 110 | 9,000 to 14,300 | Hawker meal SGD 5 to 8 (KSh 500 to 800); hostel bed SGD 35 to 50; hotel room SGD 120+ |
A worked four-week budget, Route B
| Item | Low | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| Nairobi to Bangkok return | KSh 85,000 | KSh 140,000 |
| Visas: Thailand TR, Vietnam USD 25, Cambodia USD 30 | KSh 12,000 | KSh 15,000 |
| Regional flights and buses (3 flights, 4 buses or trains) | KSh 30,000 | KSh 50,000 |
| 28 days on the ground at USD 30 to 45 | KSh 109,000 | KSh 163,000 |
| Travel insurance, 30 days | KSh 6,000 | KSh 12,000 |
| Yellow fever card (if you do not have one), SIM cards, contingency | KSh 10,000 | KSh 20,000 |
| Total | about KSh 252,000 | about KSh 400,000 |
That is a month in three countries for less than many people spend on a week in Dubai. My Dubai from Nairobi guide has the comparison if you are choosing between the two.
Money, SIMs and getting around
- Carry US dollars in clean, new notes for the visa on arrival counters (Indonesia takes cards too) and as a backup. Change to local currency at airport counters only for the first taxi; city exchange bureaus and ATMs give better rates. Cambodia runs on dollars outright.
- Cards: Kenyan Visa and Mastercard debit cards work at ATMs everywhere; tell your bank you are traveling and expect withdrawal fees of USD 3 to 6 per transaction in Thailand and Vietnam, so withdraw larger amounts less often.
- SIMs: tourist eSIMs or airport SIMs cost USD 8 to 15 for 15 to 30 days of generous data in every country here. Buy at the airport; you will need data for Grab.
- Grab is the Uber of Southeast Asia (cars and motorbike taxis) and it ends every taxi argument. In Indonesia Gojek does the same job.
- 12Go.asia books trains, buses and ferries across the region with a card; the sleeper train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and the buses across Vietnam are the classic rides.
Health, safety and the things nobody tells Kenyans
- Vaccinations: yellow fever (compulsory for us), hepatitis A and typhoid recommended, and talk to a travel clinic about malaria if you are going rural in Cambodia or Laos; the cities and beaches are low risk.
- Insurance: medical care is excellent in Bangkok, KL and Singapore and it is paid up front. Buy a policy that covers scooter riding if you plan to ride one in Bali, because most policies exclude it unless you hold a motorcycle license. My insurance guide explains what to look for.
- Safety: violent crime against tourists is rare across the region. The real risks are traffic, scooters, rip currents, and scams: tuk-tuk drivers who take you to a “closed temple” and a gem shop, fake ticket offices near stations, and the friendly stranger who has a cousin with a boat. Say no, smile, walk.
- Being African in Asia: you will be stared at, photographed, and occasionally asked to pose with someone’s grandmother. Almost all of it is curiosity, not hostility. A smile and “Kenya!” opens more doors than you expect. Racist incidents do happen, more often at nightclub doors in Bangkok and at some Bali guesthouses than anywhere else; read recent reviews from Black travelers before booking those.
- Dress: shoulders and knees covered for temples everywhere; a sarong in your bag solves it. Malaysia and Indonesia outside Bali are Muslim-majority and appreciate modesty in the way the Kenyan coast does.
The order I would do it in
If it is your first time out of Africa: Route A, three weeks, Kuala Lumpur to Singapore to Bali. No embassy, no bank statements, gentle culture shock, and Bali’s e-VOA, filed from your phone the week before, is the only visa you will touch.
If you have traveled before and can start the paperwork two months out: Route B, five weeks, Bangkok to Angkor. Apply for the Thai visa the day you decide to go, the Vietnam and Cambodia e-visas three weeks before departure, and put the yellow card in the passport wallet today.
Either way, the Kenyan passport is a better key to this region than most of us assume. My visa-free countries guide has the full list of where else it opens doors. Asia is ready for you. Go.
Frequently asked questions
Do Kenyans need a visa for Thailand in 2026?
Yes. Kenya is not on Thailand’s visa-exemption lists, and from 15 September 2026 visa on arrival is only issued to nationals of Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia. Apply for the TR tourist e-visa at thaievisa.go.th at least a month before you fly; the Royal Thai Embassy in Nairobi says processing takes at least 15 working days.
Which Southeast Asian countries are visa-free for Kenyans?
Malaysia (30 days), Singapore (30 days) and the Philippines (30 days). Hong Kong, on the way there, gives Kenyans 90 days visa-free. All three Southeast Asian countries require a free online arrival card before you land.
Can Kenyans get a visa on arrival in Bali?
Yes, but apply online first. Kenya was added to Indonesia’s visa on arrival list in February 2023 and appears in the 2024 ministerial decree that airlines’ Timatic database follows, yet Indonesia’s own e-VOA information page still displays an older list without Kenya. So file the e-VOA at evisa.imigrasi.go.id before you fly (IDR 500,000, about KSh 3,700, 30 days, extendable once for another 30) and carry the approval, rather than relying on the airport counter.
How much does a Vietnam e-visa cost for Kenyans?
USD 25 for single entry or USD 50 for multiple entry, valid for up to 90 days, applied for on the national immigration portal. Allow three working days. Phu Quoc island is visa-free for 30 days if you fly there directly.
Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Southeast Asia?
Yes, carry it. Kenya is classified as a yellow fever risk country, so Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines can all require the certificate from travelers arriving from Kenya. Check-in staff in Nairobi will ask for it.
What is the cheapest way to fly from Nairobi to Southeast Asia?
Compare Kenya Airways’ non-stop Nairobi to Bangkok flight (return from about KSh 112,000 in September 2026) with Ethiopian via Addis Ababa, Qatar via Doha and Emirates via Dubai, which sometimes come in under USD 650 return to Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. Booking six to ten weeks out and flying midweek makes the biggest difference.
How much money do I need for a month in Southeast Asia?
On a backpacker-plus budget (private rooms, street food plus a few restaurant meals, buses and one or two flights), about USD 1,200 to 1,600 for four weeks on the ground across Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia, or USD 2,000 if you add Singapore. Add the international flight, visas and insurance for a total of roughly KSh 250,000 to 400,000.
Is Southeast Asia safe for a Kenyan woman traveling alone?
It is one of the easiest regions in the world for solo women: low violent crime, excellent transport, and a huge community of solo travelers. The usual habits still apply, and the specific risks are scams (tuk-tuk detours, fake tour offices) and traffic, not personal safety.
Travel costs and government rules change without warning. What we verified against official or primary sources for this guide:
- Thailand: new visa exemption orders effective 15 September 2026 (Royal Gazette, 31 August 2026): 60-country 30-day list excludes Kenya; visa on arrival limited to Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia (Newland Chase and VisasNews, September 2026). Tourist e-visa requirements, 60-day stay and 15-working-day processing from the Royal Thai Embassy in Nairobi’s pages, updated 6 September 2026.
- Malaysia: Kenya is on the Immigration Department of Malaysia’s list of countries whose nationals do not require a visa for any purpose of entry (imi.gov.my, checked 17 September 2026).
- Philippines: Kenya is on the Bureau of Immigration’s official list of nationals allowed to enter visa-free for an initial 30 days (evisa.gov.ph policy page).
- Singapore: Kenya is not on the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority’s Assessment Level I or II visa-required lists (ica.gov.sg, checked 18 September 2026); the length of stay is set by the e-Pass issued on arrival, typically 30 days. Hong Kong: 90 days visa-free for Kenya per the Immigration Department’s visit visa table (immd.gov.hk).
- Indonesia: Visitor Visa on Arrival IDR 500,000, 30 days, extendable once, from the official evisa.imigrasi.go.id information page. Kenya and Rwanda were added to the visa on arrival list in February 2023 and the January 2024 ministerial decree lists 97 eligible countries, but the information page checked on 18 September 2026 still shows an 87-country list that omits Kenya and the other 2023 additions (Tanzania, Panama, Macau); we therefore tell readers to obtain the e-VOA online before flying.
- Vietnam: e-visa USD 25 single / USD 50 multiple entry, up to 90 days, on the national immigration portal. Cambodia: tourist e-visa USD 30 (evisa.gov.kh, fees reduced from 1 January 2025).
- Flights: Kenya Airways Nairobi to Bangkok non-stop, about 9 h 45 m, return fares from KSh 112,750 (September 2026) and KSh 138,280 (October 2026) on kenya-airways.com; Google Flights cheapest return USD 649 for late October 2026.
- Exchange rates 17 September 2026: USD 1 = KSh 129.6, THB 33.3, MYR 4.09, SGD 1.28, VND 25,960, IDR 17,700, PHP 62.8.
Fares quoted for matatus, boda bodas, taxis and small guesthouses are typical rather than fixed. Always confirm official fees with the issuing authority before you pay.
